The Absence of Love The term â€Å"I love† has been used to describe materialistic items such as â€Å"I love my IPhone†, â€Å"I love my car†, â€Å"I love my computer† and none of these things are items that people actually love, but more used to help get them through their daily lives invoking this sense of love. The writing of the modernism period has paralleled this transformation of love from a symbolic and romantic longing for a certain person to this word that carries no weight. During this period of modernism people became weak indeed and unable to make their own desertions thus keeping them from fully understanding love in its true form. The writers of this period in history are able to animate this problem through the characters and stories that they bring in to the world of literature, thereby giving light to the situation to give a clear idea of this time period. Modernism was a period of time between WWI and WWII where â€Å"society [was] spiritually weak† (Aubrey 426). The ways in which people viewed and interpreted the world had changed and people started to become disconnected from the ways that they interacted with people. Some writers of this period focused on the weakness of love and how that changed the way society viewed the emotion love. The big push towards modernism was the outbreak of WWI where people couldnt convey what life would be like after so they began to change and become new people for the new world. Now imagine having a traditional funeral procession with his husband or her wife front-and-center waiting to get the folded flag from their coffin.
